Her Interview

Ten minutes with Joan

01What do you attribute your success to?

Growing up helping my brother who has special needs taught me to always put someone else's needs before my own and to be aware of what others need. That experience shaped how I approach relationships and work, making me more empathetic and focused on helping people.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Look for a place where your talents are recognized. Men and women are different, so find an environment that appreciates your skills and talents as a woman rather than trying to fit into a male-dominated space. Go somewhere conducive to the way you want to do things.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Predetermined judgments based on gender or age before even walking into a conversation. The challenge is getting past judgments about abilities, whether gender-related or age-related.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Treating people well, respect, and camaraderie. Every problem has a resolution and there's no need to not work together to find that. If you want people to give you business, you have to treat people well.
