Jo Ann E. Quick
Jo Ann E. Q. is a dedicated educator with a wealth of experience in special education, ESL, and dyslexia instruction. Currently serving as a Special Education Teacher at KIPP Connect Middle and High School, she focuses on supporting English Language Learners, with her campus population consisting of approximately 85% ELL students. She utilizes Reading by Design, a structured dyslexia intervention program, to help students overcome learning challenges and build confidence. Jo Ann is widely recognized for her ability to connect with students and parents, having earned accolades such as “Most Improved ESL Teacher” within the Harmony School District based on STAR test growth. Her commitment to student success is exemplified in her efforts to inspire dyslexic students by highlighting role models who share their learning differences.
A lifelong learner, Jo Ann is completing her Doctor of Education (EdD) in English Language Learners at Northcentral University, with only two classes and her dissertation remaining. She has previously been accepted into prestigious educational honor societies and maintains a 4.0 GPA throughout her doctoral program. Her professional experience spans multiple leadership and teaching roles, including Special Education Chairperson at Houston ISD and ESL instructor for K-5 students at the School of Science and Technology. She is a vocal advocate for school safety, political neutrality in education, and effective evaluation and discipline practices, demonstrating her commitment to creating supportive and equitable learning environments.
Looking toward the future, Jo Ann plans to remain actively engaged in education even as she approaches retirement. She envisions contributing through substitute teaching, tutoring, college-level instruction, and counseling, while maintaining a flexible work-life balance supported by her partnership with her husband. To trust your instincts as an educator, document everything, and always advocate for students even when it is uncomfortable.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Learn classroom management early, set firm boundaries, do not be afraid to say no, and understand that being respected is more important than being liked.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Major challenges include declining parental involvement, inconsistent discipline policies, and safety concerns in schools, while opportunities exist in leadership roles, higher education teaching, tutoring, counseling, and specialized intervention services.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, fairness, accountability, compassion, consistency, and maintaining strong boundaries while remaining deeply supportive of students and colleagues.
