Joann Sharp is a dynamic and results-driven leader in instructional design, currently serving as Sr. Manager of Technology and Design at McKesson. She leads the Instructional Design team within Sales Enablement & Training, creating engaging and interactive learning experiences across instructor-led, computer-based, and web-based formats. With expertise spanning the full training product development lifecycle—from needs analysis to implementation—Joann focuses on curriculum design, multimedia production, and instructional strategy to drive learner engagement and organizational impact.

Joann began her career as a legal assistant before transitioning into technical writing and case management systems. She spent 15 years as an instructional designer at JPMorgan Chase, where she developed interactive online training modules that increased employee engagement and reduced onboarding time by 20%. She later honed her expertise in multimedia and e-learning solutions at Vale Training Solutions before joining McKesson in 2019, where her skills in RoboHelp and system documentation quickly led to leadership roles.

A lifelong learner, Joann holds a Master’s degree in Information Systems from the University of Phoenix and continuously integrates new technologies, including AI, to enhance instructional design efficiency and quality. Her professional philosophy emphasizes thoughtful, high-quality work—she encourages her team to “don’t just do something, make it your best.” With nearly three decades of experience in learning design, Joann is recognized for her ability to craft meaningful, impactful educational programs that help individuals and organizations succeed.

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my creativity, determination, and passion for teaching. I love crafting engaging learning experiences and mentoring my instructional design team, making sure every project is thoughtfully planned and executed. From starting as a legal assistant to becoming a technical writer at Chase, then an instructional designer, and now managing the team at McKesson, I’ve always given 110% to turn complex content into meaningful, well-designed learning experiences.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is: don’t be afraid. Even if I’m unsure, I push myself to try, because often I’m capable of more than I think.

My advice to young women entering this industry is to embrace opportunities, even if you feel underqualified, and always trust your instincts while giving your work your absolute best.

The biggest challenges in my field right now are navigating the abundance of learning platforms and integrating them effectively, while the biggest opportunity lies in leveraging AI to create faster, more engaging, and efficient learning experiences.

The values most important to me are lifelong learning, determination, trusting my instincts, and always delivering high-quality work, while personally I cherish relaxation, puzzles, and caring for my five dogs and nine cats.
