Her Story

About Joanna

Joanna Velotta serves as Payroll Manager with 27 years of experience in her field. She began her career right out of school at a large dental practice on the corporate side, moving through accounts receivable and credentialing before taking on payroll and human resources responsibilities. Velotta spent 16 years at a dental practice management company in a lead payroll position before transitioning through several other roles, including at a technology company. She now works at her current organization in Ohio, where she handles local taxes and union payroll as the sole payroll professional and first management role in her payroll career. Velotta possesses a wide knowledge of payroll processes, including multi-state payroll from prior positions, and she emphasizes treating every employee issue with respect and compassion since payroll directly affects livelihoods. She has taken some payroll certification classes over the years but does not hold a college degree. Outside of work, Velotta volunteers to help service others and draws inspiration from her family and past colleagues.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Joanna

01What do you attribute your success to?

I've had some really good managers and coworkers over the years that have inspired me to strive to do my best all the time and make a name for myself. My parents have always been really hard-working people and they were able to provide a really good life for me. It's rewarding to be able to do that for my own children.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Not letting bad days define who you are. Acknowledge when you've done something wrong and come up with a solution and accept mistakes and learn from them. Not let roadblocks be things you learn from and not things that set you back. Be passionate about what you do and be proud of the things that you've accomplished.
