Her Story

About Joanne

I have enjoyed 20+ years of experience in HR, working for Alko Distributors, Inc. My 32 year tenure with Alko Distributors allowed me to learn and grow in many areas of business. Beginning as a receptionist, I quickly moved to accounting and then to payroll. My experience in HR began with processing payroll. It was not long before I was searching for affordable healthcare and extending the company benefit package to include a 401k plan. I became aware of the need to expand the employee benefits even more, so I began finding creative ways to appreciate our employees. Over the years, I developed initiatives to increase morale and recognize long-term employees for their faithfulness and dedication. I introduced "Pot Luck" lunches, team building activities, and genuine recognition for who they are and their contribution to the team. In 2014 I became a licensed minister with the United Pentecostal Church International. My status as a licensed minister helped me in gain added trust from the employees. Because of who I am and the trust and confidence others have in me, I believe my position in HR has been well complimented. My co-workers have proven the trust they have in me, taking advantage of my "open door" policy. My comfy blue office chair has been occupied several time with troubled employees who have felt safe in bearing their burdens. My HR work has been mostly self-taught, growing from a desire to make employees feel valued and recognized. I have used every vehicle and teaching platform afforded to me by the payroll platforms we have chosen to work with through the years. It has been unfortunate that Alko Distributors had to close their doors after 50 years of business. Presently, I have stayed with the new business, Kirson Medical LLC where I continue to work in the same capacity as HR Director.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Joanne

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my career success to those whom I have worked these past 30+ years and their confidence and belief in me. God has blessed me to have them in my life and has given me favor throughout the years to learn and grow.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Trust in yourself, never give up, and be open to learning new things.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Do not compromise who you are. Stay true to yourself and allow your integrity to speak for you.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I believe the biggest challenge is our economy. When dollars get tight, the first area that gets cut are initiatives and benefits. Over the years I have seen the high cost of health care and the general rate of inflation damage the HR departments. You must stay aware and find ways to let people know they are seen and appreciated whether the dollars are there or not.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The most important value to me is investing in people and making sure they know they matter. I believe that at the end of the day, everybody needs to be able to feel good about themselves, they need to feel they are safe, and they need to know that they matter. Whether think they do or not, they matter! I am intentional in letting people know that what they do matters and that their life matters. "Investment in people yields the highest return in life", is a quote that I wholeheartedly believe and one that I work to try to live by. I enjoy seeing people grow in themselves and mature. I find joy in being able to be that calming person for them; the one that can give them the smile when they are having a bad day or the pat on the back for a job well done. That's very rewarding for me.
