Her Story

About Jocelyn

I work for a private preschool called Trinity Kids in Compton, California. I started as a lead teacher in October and received a promotion to site supervisor two months later. I have a background in early childhood education going back to 1988. I founded my nonprofit Joshua's Puzzle Connection in 2014 after losing my son Joshua, who had autism. We organize Blue Angel Day picnics, toy drives for foster kids, bowling events, and support for the elderly through Project Orrenta's Angels. I also volunteer with children's ministry at church and previously with Special Needs Network.

Ten minutes with Jocelyn

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my parents and my grandma who are no longer with me. My dad always encouraged me to learn as much as I can and to keep my regular job while having two or three hustles on the side, all done legally.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I received was to learn as much as I can, research, keep abreast of changes in the field, take refresher courses, attend workshops, continue reading different materials, and stay connected with people in your field.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Keep an open mind, do lots of research, be open to receiving help and learning, find workshops or take classes to grow, network, show up and be present in the community, and always be a consistent student ready to learn because learning stops when you're dead.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges in the nonprofit field are trying to obtain funding and volunteers. Opportunities include friends who donate and tell others about our work for exposure, and using social media to promote events and accept donations.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I am a believer so I value God at the center of everything I do. I believe in being honest, having good morals, and treating people the way I want to be treated. As a supervisor, I watch my tone when giving correction and provide explanations.
