Her Story

About Jocelynn

Jocelynn Poppy Johnson is a higher education professional, community engagement leader, and media entrepreneur whose work centers on student success, strategic communication, community partnerships, and institutional impact. She currently serves as Manager of Community Services at Prairie View A&M University's College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources and also works as an Adjunct Instructor. In these roles, she develops outreach initiatives, builds external partnerships, supports student engagement and recruitment, and creates programs that connect students and communities with academic and professional opportunities. Jocelynn's career began in higher education recruitment as an Admissions Counselor at Baylor University before she pursued her Master of Business Administration at Prairie View A&M University. During her graduate studies, she became deeply involved with the Graduate Student Association, eventually serving as president and representing more than 1,000 graduate students. She introduced new student-focused programs, secured $30,000 in institutional funding, expanded the organization's membership from approximately 100 to more than 400 students, and delivered the university's graduate commencement address in Fall 2024 and Spring 2025. Her leadership also earned University and college-wide recognition through the Distinguished Leadership Award and the ROOTED Academy Leadership Award. Alongside her higher education career, Jocelynn is the Founder and Director of Poppy J. Media, a multimedia company she established in 2017 that combines storytelling, strategy, digital media, and social impact. Her work has included podcasting, documentary production, branded campaigns, and mentoring emerging creatives through the Poppy J. Collegiate Internship Program. She was nationally recognized as an AT&T Dream in Black Rising Future Maker in 2022 and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration at Liberty University with a focus on Strategic Media and Digital Content. Across her academic, professional, and entrepreneurial work, Poppy remains committed to serving her community, creating opportunities for others, and encouraging people to embrace their own paths rather than comparing themselves to anyone else.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Jocelynn

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to having a genuine sense of care for my community. When you care about something bigger than yourself, the impact of the work you do can reach people you may never even know are watching. That commitment to serving others and creating meaningful impact continues to guide my professional journey.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would remind young women that comparison is the thief of joy. There is room for everyone, regardless of their path, industry, location, or goals. There is space for you and a place for you, and you are exactly where you are supposed to be in each moment. Stay focused on your own journey rather than comparing it to someone else's.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in higher education right now is finding authentic ways to reach and engage students in an environment that is constantly changing through technology, AI, and evolving communication habits. At the same time, those changes create major opportunities to use storytelling, digital media, and stronger community partnerships to make institutions more visible, relatable, and impactful. I see a real opportunity to help higher education communicate its value more intentionally while creating stronger connections between students, institutions, and the communities they serve.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are faith, family, purpose, service, growth, and excellence. I want the work I do to have a meaningful impact, create opportunities for others, and reflect integrity and intention. Personally, I strive to keep God and family at the center while continuing to grow into the person and leader I am called to be.
