Her Story
About Jodi
I go into people's homes or their place of business and help them to streamline how their home or business functions, and create systems so that they can maintain it long after I've left their home. My favorite thing to do is work with people who are in some sort of transition, whether they are going through a divorce, having a new baby, or empty nesters trying to redefine their space. I always tell my clients, your home should reflect who you are today, and it should be a simple, safe space for you to come home and always feel good. I have a team that works with me, and we start with an assessment consultation to understand what the client is looking for and strategize how to get to that end goal. We begin with the decluttering process, then shift things into the right space, and finally create the organizing system. You have to clear everything out in order to create a system that is actually going to work and be effective. The key to being an effective organizer isn't just that I can go in and do it - the key is to transfer the skills so that you can do it after I've left your home. The goal is not for people to become dependent on me, but for me to do a good enough job so that you can maintain it long after I've left.

Ten minutes with Jodi
01What do you attribute your success to?
I've been in business a long time and I have a very good reputation. My team is amazing. We do what we do with a fabulous attitude - we come in with big smiles, big energy, and we make the process enjoyable. We have fun while we're doing it. My business comes really from word of mouth and my reputation. I think it's all the things I've been saying - treating everyone's home with the utmost respect, having no judgment about whatever people are going through, and being there only to help. We treat people with the utmost integrity.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received would probably be to do what you love, and you'll never feel like you're working. And that is a true statement.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Learn from people that have been doing it longer than you have, because there is so much to gain and so much to learn. This is an industry where basically anybody can just wake up and say, I want to be a professional organizer. You don't actually need the formal education. And if you think just because you're an organized person that you can automatically just walk into someone's home and help them to get organized, that's somewhat of a fallacy. So I would say, if this is something that you truly want to make a profession, work with somebody who's been in the industry for a long time. Learn from them. And then, if you want to go out on your own, you can do that.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
There's a lot of clutter out there, so there's a lot of opportunities. I've been very fortunate - I don't see a lot of organizers as competition. I think we can all work together as far as making referrals to each other. Most of the seasoned organizers in Pittsburgh are actually friends of mine, and if there's a job that maybe I'm too busy to take on, I might refer it out to them. So I don't see the other organizers as being competition. For me, the greatest opportunity is that my business is exactly what I want it to be. I'm in a position after 26 years where I can take on the jobs that I want and refer the ones that I don't want for whatever reason. My husband and I like to do a lot of traveling, and it's nice to be able to say, I'm not going to work the month of July, I'm going to outsource that, or allow my team to do the work while I'm not there. It's a nice opportunity that I get to work as much as I want to work, and I don't have to work if I don't want to work.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity is most important to me. We treat everyone's home with the utmost respect. Whatever people are going through, there's no judgment. We are only there to help. We don't judge, and we treat people with the utmost integrity.
