About Joellen

Joellen Killion is a distinguished educator, leadership consultant, author, and facilitator whose career in education spans more than 47 years. She began her journey as a classroom teacher in the Detroit, Michigan, area, where her unique expertise in Latin, Classical Studies, and English—earned through a double major at the University of Michigan—opened the door to a rewarding teaching career. After serving in outstanding schools across Michigan and Colorado, she transitioned into central office administration as an English Language Arts curriculum coordinator. It was there that she discovered her passion for professional learning, training, and leadership development, inspiring a lifelong commitment to helping educators and leaders grow.

Over the course of her career, Joellen has worked with school systems, national organizations, and international partners to strengthen teaching, coaching, facilitation, and collaborative leadership. As an independent consultant for the past 15 years, she has supported educators and leaders around the world in building the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to improve teaching and learning. A prolific author, Joellen has written numerous books, chapters, and professional publications focused on instructional coaching, professional learning, leadership, and educational change. Her work continues to influence educators globally through speaking engagements, consulting, and thought leadership.

Today, Joellen is gradually transitioning toward retirement while remaining deeply committed to the profession she loves. She recently co-founded Leadership Blueprints with two colleagues to help leaders develop the capacity for participatory, collaborative leadership that fosters trust, engagement, and meaningful results. Outside of her professional work, Joellen enjoys traveling and exploring new cultures, experiences that continue to enrich her perspective as an educator and leader. Guided by values of service, integrity, collaboration, and lifelong learning, she remains dedicated to empowering others to make a lasting impact in their schools, organizations, and communities.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Joellen

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the incredible women who have supported, challenged, and inspired me throughout my career. Building meaningful partnerships with talented, driven women has strengthened my leadership, expanded my perspective, and reinforced my belief that collaboration is one of the most powerful drivers of success. I have learned that when women empower one another, we create opportunities that benefit not only ourselves but also the communities we serve.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is simple: commit fully. Whether I am leading a project, serving my community, or mentoring others, I believe success comes from giving my full energy, passion, and dedication to the work. When you commit wholeheartedly to your purpose, you create opportunities for meaningful impact and lasting growth.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice is to persist, no matter the obstacles you encounter. Believe in your strengths, confidently communicate the value you bring, and demonstrate your abilities through consistent action. This profession requires a genuine passion for service and a commitment to improving the lives of students, families, and communities. Stay focused on your purpose, continue learning, and never allow setbacks to define your potential.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I believe there are tremendous opportunities for individuals who are truly committed to serving others and creating positive change within their communities. The ability to transform lives through education and leadership has never been more important. At the same time, one of the ongoing challenges is overcoming biases that still exist toward women leaders, particularly within traditionally male-dominated organizations. I see this as an opportunity to lead by example, demonstrate excellence, and help create a more inclusive future for the next generation of women leaders.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide both my personal and professional life are honesty, integrity, collaboration, and effectiveness. I believe trust is built through transparency and consistency, while meaningful progress comes from working together toward a shared purpose. These values shape the way I lead, build relationships, and serve others, and they remain the foundation of every decision I make.
