Her Interview
Ten minutes with Joni
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would attribute my success to having a very strong sisterhood and village. My best friends keep me grounded and keep pushing me to keep going and doing better. Anytime I think I've gotten to one goal, they're right there to celebrate it and say, okay, what's next? You can keep going. So, definitely the village that I've built.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Go for it. That's really the best advice. Don't let anybody or anything stop you from trying. A lot of my career I spent wanting to have my hands in every little thing and know everything, instead of just jumping and trying to prepare myself by saying, oh, I know all of it, and I essentially wasted a lot of time. So, the best advice that I've been given and would give is just go for it. If you want to do it, just go for it.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would just tell them to make sure that they keep their eyes and ears open, that they pay attention, and again, just go for it.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think HR and benefits is full of opportunities. I think all it takes is for people to not be scared of it. HR is not the enemy. Most people think human resources is, and there's so many different portions of human resources that you could go into, so I think the field is full of opportunity, even for people from beginners and on up. And even with the coming of AI, and it seemingly taking over everything, it can never replace that human touch, so there's opportunity for the human beings to be on the front line and to be making sure that these things are working correct. As far as challenges, overthinking and constantly attempting to learn every facet and every avenue has been a challenge for me. Instead of just going for what I knew or what I felt was right, I would constantly give myself roadblocks. And I've learned that when I just go for it, and I stay on path to what it is that I want, and play into my strengths, that it always works out. It can become overwhelming because you're trying to be a jack-of-all-trades and learn all the things.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, definitely, and just having a level of kindness. It pays, and it's free to be kind. You never know what everybody's going through. One of the best parts of my job is being able to have those kind of more intimate relationships with my essentially co-workers or my employees, in that I help them with life events. They're having babies, they're having marriages and divorces and all these things that impact benefits, and I'm there to kind of hold their hand through that, and it usually becomes much more than just how to process an enrollment. So just be kind, have integrity, and be immaculate with your word. I always tell them that I work for them. I don't work for the company, I work for them, because if they go on strike, I don't have a job.
