Her Story

About josephine

I have been practicing law for over 30 years, working as both a civil litigation partner at a firm in Dallas and as a registered patent attorney before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Currently, my focus is on criminal law, where I do indigent criminal defense work here in Texas. In my position, I try cases, interview clients, and make legal decisions. This work is definitely interesting and never boring. My inspiration to enter the legal field came from my grandfather, who was a criminal defense attorney. For me, it's really important to successfully defend people who've been charged with a crime, and I approach my work with the values of being kind to other people and doing no harm.

Ten minutes with josephine

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hard work and determination. These have been the driving forces throughout my 30-year career in law.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was to not give up, no matter what other people think you can or should do, educationally. This advice has stayed with me throughout my journey in law and has helped me persevere through challenges and continue pursuing my goals despite what others might have thought.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

If you want to do this, don't listen to other people's advice about what you should do. Follow your own path and make your own decisions about your career, regardless of what others may tell you.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge and opportunity in my field is really to successfully defend people who've been charged with a crime. This is at the heart of what I do in criminal defense work, and it represents both the most demanding and most meaningful aspect of my practice.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

It's really important for me to be kind to other people, and do no harm. These values guide both my professional work as a criminal defense attorney and my personal interactions.
