Her Story

About Josie

Josie Scalici serves as a Consumer Brands Fellow at MSL Group in New York, NY. She began her role in June and has one year of experience in public relations, building on three years in overall marketing. Scalici earned her bachelor's degree in Business Administration and Marketing from Auburn University, where she also gained practical experience as a social media intern for the men's basketball team. Her interest in public relations grew from observing earned media for brands like those at Sephora, shifting from an initial focus on social media work. She values the people she has chosen to surround herself with, including her team at MSL and friends in her personal life after moving to New York post-graduation. Scalici attributes her success to her parents and brother for their support and advice, particularly her father's professional guidance, combined with the personal drive and self-talk she cultivated in her senior year of college. She advises young women entering the industry to lean on each other and communicate openly about struggles, noting that being new to a role presents challenges in asking questions and admitting knowledge gaps, but having the courage to do so is essential.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Josie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my parents and my brother for pushing me and driving me to want the best for myself, along with the personal drive and self-talk I developed in my senior year of college. My dad has been a big part of my professional success through his advice and self-talk tips.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would advise young women to lean on each other and communicate openly about struggles rather than keeping to themselves. It's important to say upfront how you feel and what you're struggling with, as a community helps you realize you're not alone.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Being new is really hard, especially when you come to a new company or role. It's challenging to ask questions and admit that you don't know something, but having the courage to do so is key.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The people I've chosen to be around me are most important. After moving to New York post-Auburn, I realized I can choose my path and surround myself with people who make me better, both at work with my team at MSL and in my personal life with my roommate and friends.
