Her Story
About Joy
I've been in early childhood education for over a decade. My career path originally was going to be in the sciences as a physician assistant, but while taking the classes, I realized that's not where my passion lies. What I gravitate towards naturally is children, since I worked in my children's church at my church, and children just gravitate naturally towards me. I had the opportunity to work as an aide at a childcare center, and that's where I decided I can do this for the rest of my life because I just love working with children. From there, I worked as an aide, went to teacher, lead teacher, assistant director, and I'm currently a director. My main area of expertise is definitely early childhood education, from 6 weeks to school-agers, but my passion is really for the toddlers. A typical day for me usually involves greeting my children as they come into the school, having quick conversations with their parents, whether it's asking how their night was or if they need help with anything on our system. Then I do a quick walk through my school to make sure that my teachers have everything they need, whether they're asking me a question or it's something they need updating, so I just make sure that I'm available to students, my staff, and as well as their parents.

Ten minutes with Joy
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my mother, because she really does encourage me in my career. Whenever I am stressed out or having problems, I always go to her for advice, and she's able to help me. She's been my constant source of support and guidance throughout my professional journey.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received was from my father during when I was going towards my career path and looking for work. He always told me to go towards something that comes naturally to me, instead of struggling with something that is not second nature. For me, that was children. Working with children came naturally, like the back of my hand. That advice really guided me to find my true passion in early childhood education.
