Her Story
About Joy
I've been in the executive search field for over 40 years, working with what is now Spencer Reed Group. My journey started when I was laid off from an HR position at a trucking company and went to Professional Career Development looking for a job. They asked me if I had ever thought about executive search, and I was intrigued. I liked the aspects of human resources and helping people, but there were some aspects I struggled with in my previous role, like my credibility with plant personnel when I had just graduated from college a few years before. What drew me to executive search was how professional they were and how their beliefs were very much into helping the client as well as the candidate. To this day, that is what their goals are, and that's what I have lived by. It's not about the money. It is about helping that person and that client find the right fit. I retired about 5 years ago but recently came back because I really missed it. I had people calling me at home, and I continued to stay on LinkedIn and recruited for the company remotely, but I just didn't like that, so I decided to come back into the office and do the whole thing. I think my most notable professional achievement is probably that I have people calling me from 20 years ago, 30 years ago. It's very fulfilling.

Ten minutes with Joy
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to myself and my own goal setting. I work with a great team of people. I have worked for a wonderful company. You know, most people are not able to say that. When I tell people I've worked with the same people for that many years, they're astounded. But I loved the people I have worked for. They're great mentors, they're great leaders, and I have learned a lot from them. My boss is my best friend, and you know, you can't say that about a lot of people. My president, I've worked with him for years. I feel like I could count on them for anything. They are very patient, they are very kind, and they're great mentors. I mean, I learn something from them every day, and after all these years, we have a huddle every day. We bounce things off of each other. They're very smart.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I think the best career advice I've ever received is to remember that tomorrow is another day. You know, you're in charge of your own destiny.
