About Joy
Joy Hughey is an Organizational Design and Change Leader specializing in turning fragmented enterprises into aligned, human-centered operating systems where people can thrive. She currently serves as a Transformation Consultant at Slalom in the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex, where she leads large-scale enterprise transformation work focused on building operating models, governance structures, and execution systems that connect strategy to day-to-day delivery. Her work consistently centers on improving clarity, coordination, and how people experience complex systems.
Over the past 15 years, Joy has led transformation and operating model work across healthcare, financial services, logistics, automotive, aviation, and technology organizations. Her experience spans roles at Optum, Amazon Web Services, and FedEx Office, as well as client engagements with Capital One, Toyota, AmerisourceBergen, and Southwest Airlines. Across these environments, she has built governance models, portfolio management systems, and cross-functional operating frameworks that help organizations move from siloed execution to integrated, outcome-driven performance.
Joy’s approach to transformation is grounded in a human-first perspective: she focuses not only on fixing processes, but on making systems legible and navigable for the people inside them. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Texas A&M University and brings together analytical rigor with systems thinking to drive sustainable change. Her work is guided by a consistent belief that organizations perform best when individuals clearly understand their role, contribution, and connection to the broader system.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Joy
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to meeting people where they are. Meeting people where they are. If there's one thing I've always learned is I operate where they are, and make changes where they are. Looking for pain points, I listened for people to point out things that are causing them pain, and then bringing our things that are slowing things down, and focusing my attention on that.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
You make a way, show a way and then get out of the way. You develop the process. You show them the process, then you refine it. And then you allow them to change and refine it, and make it their own.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Study organizational design and get into psychology to understand people. Be self aware of your strengths and weaknesses. It's all about contributing and getting the job done. Don't be superwoman, don't perform, and don't please.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Learning how to use AI beyond a surface level so it can be utilized to its full power is the biggest opportunity right now. The focus needs to be on assessing processes, readiness, data systems, skill sets, and governance before implementing AI.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
People over process, living in the moment, operating in the present and looking forward to the future. Connection and relationships are important.
