Her Interview
Ten minutes with Joyce
01What do you attribute your success to?
I definitely attribute my success to my mentors. It's so important to have mentors and having a coach - I have two personal development coaches that I still tap into regularly. You can't do this on your own. Yeah, you could study, but you could never learn life skills by reading. So, having someone there to guide you along the way is the best thing for any industry, I would say.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is to personally persevere, because life will throw different curveballs at you. You know, you can pivot, but just stay on course, and eventually you reach your goal.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say find out if this is really what you want to do. Most people jump into my industry leaving their current position, and I always tell people, work it part-time, just to make sure that this is it. And once you've made at least 6 months of your current salary, then you can stay here. You know, then that means you're good. But until then, don't just jump into it. And also, there's so many different companies out there that promise the world, right? They promise the moon. Well, I mean, realistically, it's all sales, and you have to develop skills in order to do that. So, build up your skill first. Be good at it, then you can jump into this full-time.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The opportunities are just having different demographics, and because I'm at that age now, I'm focusing more on people who are retiring, but at the same time, because we can serve a wide range of people, we can serve the younger ones too. But the challenge I'm finding, especially with younger people, is the language they speak. I'm learning from my daughter, who is 26. You know, just being able to know your audience - because you have to know your audience. So, learning the culture, it's totally different with these younger people, you know, so I'm learning how they are, and how they speak, their thought process, in order for me to be able to serve them better. That's where the challenge is, but I'm always up for a good challenge, and I'm learning with the help of my daughter.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I would say having integrity is very important personally. Secondly, of course, God is important in my life, so to be led spiritually. And family is also important to me. So making sure I make time for my family, and my agents make time for their families too. You know, when things come up, it's okay. That's when we'll jump in. And that's why it's good to have a team, that way we can help wherever there's a need.
