Her Story
About Joyful Joni
joyful joni gold is a spirituality and meditation leader and disability rights advocate based in Los Osos, California. Her journey has been shaped by resilience, personal transformation, spirituality, and a commitment to helping others discover their own strength. She experienced a spiritual awakening at age 15, which became an important foundation for her lifelong interest in meditation and spiritual growth. Her professional background also includes education administration, including serving as a district-level Assistant Director of Special Education, as well as earlier experience as a revenue officer with the IRS. Following significant health challenges that prevented her from working beginning in 2001, joyful joni embarked on a long process of rebuilding her health, independence, and connection with her community. Beginning in 2018, she consciously focused on transforming her physical and spiritual well-being and challenging beliefs and fears that had limited her. Her journey included substantial physical transformation, rehabilitation, and learning to expand her independence while respecting her personal needs. These experiences strengthened her commitment to helping others recognize possibilities beyond the limitations they may place on themselves. Today, Joni leads an online meditation group serving the Pacific time zone and facilitates meditation, spiritual education, and community activities. She leads the spiritual book study Beyond the Book: Belief, Being, and Bliss, participates in choir and insight talks through Awakening Ways Center for Spiritual Living, and contributes to disability advocacy through Access Central Coast. Her advocacy includes public education on hidden disabilities and service and emotional support animals, participation in disability rights initiatives, and co-writing and starring in the Disability 101 video. Through spirituality, advocacy, public speaking, and community service, joyful joni seeks to share knowledge and resources with others while encouraging people to approach life with love, faith, curiosity, and a greater sense of possibility.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Joyful Joni
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my spiritual practice, perseverance, and willingness to continue growing through challenging circumstances. Reconnecting with my community, maintaining a consistent meditation practice, focusing on positive thinking, and committing to rehabilitation and personal growth have all played important roles in helping me move forward. I have learned to approach life with greater awareness, love, faith, and openness to what is possible.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I did not receive much formal career advice or mentoring throughout my career. However, an early coworker encouraged me to “share the wealth,” and that principle has stayed with me. I believe knowledge, resources, experience, and opportunities become more meaningful when they are shared with others rather than kept to oneself.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women to remain curious and embrace continual learning. I believe it is important to live from a place of love and faith rather than fear, challenge limiting beliefs, and surround yourself with people who uplift and encourage you. Most importantly, share your gifts, knowledge, resources, and talents with others. Personal growth becomes even more meaningful when it can contribute to the growth and well-being of the broader community.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the significant challenges is the impact of policy and funding changes on services such as In-Home Supportive Services, as well as the continuing lack of awareness and accommodation for people with hidden disabilities. At the same time, there are meaningful opportunities to strengthen community support, expand public education, and advocate for greater understanding and accessibility. I believe these efforts can help people with disabilities maintain dignity, independence, and the ability to live in their own homes.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are love, faith, generosity, presence, positivity, and service to others. I strive to approach life with openness and compassion, remain present in the moment, and share what I have learned with the people around me. I believe that supporting others, creating meaningful community, and approaching life from love rather than fear are essential to both personal fulfillment and meaningful service.
