Her Story
About Joyita
Joyita Bakshi Ghose is a self-taught artist, fashion designer, and entrepreneur based in Milpitas, California. She is the Founder and CEO of Poshaq Silks, a distinctive line of hand-painted silk artwear and accessories that she has developed for approximately 20 years. Her collection includes silk scarves, ponchos, kimono blouses, and men's ties, with her work sold through boutiques, galleries, museums, catalogs, and other retail and cultural venues across the United States. Her work has also been featured at Hollywood and entertainment-related events and in museum gift stores.
Joyita's artistic journey began in India, where she was studying English literature while feeling a strong desire to paint. During an illness that required hospitalization, her mother gave her fabric to paint, and Joyita began creating artwork on textiles. She later gave some of her painted pieces to the doctors and nurses who had cared for her, and their positive response helped inspire her to pursue the art form professionally. She went on to study fashion design and graphic design and developed Poshaq Silks into a business centered on handmade, American-made wearable art. She remains committed to developing her craft and continues to draw and paint daily.
Joyita has been invited to showcase her work at the Smithsonian's Craft2Wear exhibition, including the 2026 event, where she was selected as one of approximately 80 artists from hundreds of applicants. She is involved with organizations including the Indian American Artists Association, North American Women's Caucus of Arts, Rotary, the Arts Commission for the City of Milpitas, SVC Creates, and Tilker School of Design. Outside her professional work, she volunteers through Satya Sai Seva, supports humanitarian efforts, enjoys gardening, visiting botanical gardens, reading, singing, cooking, and traveling, and is currently learning Indian traditional dance.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Joyita
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to following my passion, listening to my inner voice, and remaining committed to growing as an artist. I am a self-taught artist who continues to draw and paint every day, and I am most proud of the growth I have experienced throughout my artistic journey. My experiences have taught me to remain persistent, continue learning, and find purpose in the work I create.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I have learned to listen to my own inner voice and have the courage to follow my heart and intuition. My journey began when I followed my desire to create art, even while studying English literature in India. That decision eventually led me to painting on fabric and building Poshaq Silks. My experiences have reinforced the importance of pursuing what genuinely inspires me rather than allowing outside expectations to determine my path.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women to follow their passion and trust their creative instincts. Find what genuinely inspires you and continue developing your craft every day. Be willing to grow, experiment, and create your own path. I also believe that meaningful experiences, including difficult ones, can sometimes lead to unexpected opportunities and something beautiful. Most importantly, appreciate each day, remain true to yourself, and continue creating.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the opportunities in my field is bringing handmade American artistry to a broader audience while continuing to grow the market for unique, hand-painted wearable art. Through Poshaq Silks, I have worked to expand wholesale and retail relationships with boutiques, galleries, museums, catalogs, cruise lines, and other markets. At the same time, independent artists and American-made products face competition from less expensive imported products, making creative differentiation, strong partnerships, and continued brand development especially important.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Creativity, authenticity, perseverance, gratitude, and making a positive impact are important to me. I value continuing to learn and grow as an artist while creating work that brings people joy and confidence. My experiences have also taught me to appreciate life and live each day fully. I value giving back through service, supporting other artists, and helping preserve and celebrate art and culture.
