Her Story
About Judy
I am an attorney with 26 and a half years of experience. I began in civil rights, employment law, and labor while serving as a tax hearing officer for the state and an arbitration apprentice. Now I focus on immigration law, representing clients in court for two law firms. I find fulfillment in helping people, whether by getting them their jobs back through arbitration or assisting immigrants to stay in the country.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Judy
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to hard work and having cheerleaders, especially my mother who always believed in me and put it in my mind that I could do anything. That gave me the confidence to pursue anything I put my mind to without wanting to disappoint her.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
One of my mentors in law school told me that as a Black woman I would always have to work harder, and that it's not what you know, it's who you know. Hard work remains essential, but networking and connections are key.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Work hard to learn as much as you can about the industry. It can be harder on women due to family duties, but you can have it all with good time management and balancing career and family.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge in immigration law is that the law is often not on the side of immigrants, making it difficult to help clients facing deportation despite dire conditions or violence in their home countries.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty, loyalty, hard work, and giving 110 percent to everything you do.
