Her Interview

Ten minutes with Julia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a personal mission statement that guides both my life and my work: to make a meaningful difference in the world. That sense of purpose gives me the motivation to keep moving forward, even when the work is challenging. I believe everyone has the ability to positively impact the lives of others, and I strive to use my roles as an educator, nonprofit leader, and theatre artist to create opportunities that inspire growth, connection, and lasting change.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is, "Don't be limited by what you can't do; be liberated by what you can." That mindset has shaped the way I approach both challenges and opportunities throughout my career. Rather than focusing on obstacles beyond my control, I choose to invest my energy in the strengths, resources, and opportunities I do have. It has given me the confidence to pursue meaningful work, embrace new possibilities, and continue making a positive impact through theatre, education, and nonprofit leadership.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the theatre and arts industry is simple: Don't wait for permission. You already have it. Trust your voice, your ideas, and your ability to lead. Don't let self-doubt or the expectation of validation hold you back from pursuing opportunities or creating your own. Some of the most meaningful work comes from those who step forward with confidence, embrace their unique perspective, and have the courage to make an impact.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field is balancing the many responsibilities that come with both a meaningful career and a full personal life. As a theatre educator, nonprofit leader, wife, mother of two, daughter, and friend, I've learned that success isn't about doing everything at once it's about knowing what deserves your attention in each season of life. One of the best pieces of advice I've received is, "You can do all the things, just not all at the same time." That perspective has taught me to embrace life's constant rhythm, recognize shifting priorities, and understand that lasting impact comes from knowing when to step forward, when to pause, and how to maintain balance along the way.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

One of the values I hold most closely is the importance of renewal and self-care. I believe you can only give your best to others when you first take the time to care for yourself. A piece of wisdom that has stayed with me is, "You can only operate when your cup is overflowing." Whether it's spending quality time with my family, connecting with friends, or creating meaningful experiences that restore my energy, I intentionally make space to recharge. By leading from a place of abundance rather than exhaustion, I'm able to show up more fully in service to my students, colleagues, community, and the people I care about most.
