About Julia
Julia Gilban Cohen began her career as a special education teacher at the high school level with the New York City Department of Education, serving for six years from 2018 to 2024. She earned her master's degree in education, specializing in special education, from UW-Madison. After relocating to Los Angeles with her partner, she pursued a long-held interest in journalism by freelancing for several months before obtaining her current position writing about education technology. In addition to her reporting work, she is beginning a role mentoring student journalists in Boyle Heights and is developing an independent podcast focused on interviewing teachers from various locations.

01What do you attribute your success to?
Believing in yourself and having a vision for what you want. Not selectively listening to advice but only taking what resonates with you from people you admire. Constantly remaining curious about your job and other things in life to keep balance and excitement.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Discover what you are learned in or have expertise in and develop a niche. Constantly look to people you admire, reach out to them, ask how they got there. Trust that people want to help and network deliberately.
