About Julia
Julia Harris works in the environmental power industry on the state and federal compliance side at a gas and diesel-run plant. She monitors emissions from power generation to ensure they stay within permit limits, manages water discharge into the river to meet standards, and handles proper disposal routes for any on-site waste. Her responsibilities also include extensive reporting and monitoring related to air and water permits. Beyond her primary role, she runs a resale and consignment business as well as an e-commerce business that partners with companies to drive revenue and build scalable assets. Julia attributes her success to wanting more than just a good life and striving for excellence to add value and make an impact. She advises young women entering the industry not to be afraid to pivot, noting that environmental work is her background but this specific area was not her favorite, and that one is never stuck since it is not the only option for adding value.

01What do you attribute your success to?
Just wanting more than just a good life. I hate the phrase that it is what it is. I strive for excellence, and I want that for the people around me. I just want to be able to make that impact where I add more value, to whatever I'm doing. The enemy of a good life, or of a great life is a good life.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't be afraid to pivot. Because environmental is my background, but this is the part of my field that I didn't really love. You're not stuck. This is the situation, whatever their career is, whether you like it or not, it's not your only option. And you can still find other ways to add value or to make your life more towards what you want it to be. It's not just what you studied.
