Her Story

About Julia

Julia Hastings is a finance professional with two years of experience in the financial field. She specializes in retail finance, particularly tax and auditing, as well as investment banking finance. Currently, she trains AI models for Anthropic and OpenAI, developing systems using Python to generate key financial information such as P&L statements for small businesses and retail investors. She is pursuing a master's degree in accounting at the University of Michigan, where she majored in economics and minored in business and German. Her education at the competitive university inspired her to take risks and pursue opportunities outside her main internship, leading to her AI training role. Julia is a member of the Society of Women in Economics and the Society of Women in Finance. She attributes her success to the incredible women she met at Michigan, including her mentor Jenny Just, who taught her about positioning herself in a male-dominated field and seizing early opportunities. She is also involved with Poker Power, teaching women poker to improve decision-making and risk-taking skills.

Ten minutes with Julia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say a lot of the incredible women that I got to be friends with at Michigan, especially Jenny Just. She taught me a lot about thinking, positioning myself as a woman in a field dominated by men, and how I can take advantage of certain opportunities early on. So, I would attribute success to not just her, but all of the women I've met in society, women in economics and finance.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I think I received this advice: Whether you think you can or can't, you're right. Because you are your own biggest cheerleader or enemy, and whatever you believe you can or can't do, you will rise or fall to that.
