Ten minutes with Julia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my personal journey as a mother in recovery from opioid addiction. My nearly four years in recovery have given me a perspective that I believe is essential when advocating for families navigating addiction, the child welfare system, and the courts. I have chosen to use what I have learned from my experiences to help other parents find their way through systems that can be confusing, expensive, and intimidating.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage young women entering this field to make sure they are informed by the right people and individuals with the appropriate qualifications. It is important to remember that you have a voice and to have the confidence to use it. Being informed and willing to speak up can make a meaningful difference in advocacy.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the challenges in my field is communicating with and navigating the same departments and systems where I have personally experienced difficulties and have a personal history. My own experiences have given me insight into those challenges, but they can also make navigating those systems personally complex. My recovery, however, has given my past purpose and created an opportunity for me to use what I have learned to help other parents.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Community, peer support, independence, advocacy, and continued growth are important values to me. Starting my own business has given me the independence to pursue ideas that are meaningful to me and create work around issues that deserve greater attention. Continuing my education is also an important part of that journey, with the long-term goal of attending law school. My volunteer work with organizations such as Parents Helping Parents has reinforced my belief in the power of community and peer support.
