About Julia

Julia S. Beck is a strategist, speaker, author, and founder of It’s Working Project, with a career spanning more than three decades at the intersection of women, families, brands, and the workplace. Julia began her entrepreneurial career in 1991 following experience in media, including serving as director of marketing at WMZQ in Washington, D.C. Her work has focused on strategy, branding, and positioning, helping brands and organizations better understand and connect with women and families. Julia introduced the concept of the Panini Generation, highlighting the structural and economic realities faced by people caring for multiple generations at once. Her work builds on decades of research and advocacy around women’s lives, workplace participation, and caregiving. Through It’s Working Project, Julia leads strategy sessions, develops philanthropic programs, facilitates panels, and advises brands, private-sector organizations, and leaders on issues including recruitment, retention, reputation, and the economic impact of caregiving. A graduate of The George Washington University, Julia is currently developing her forthcoming book, The Panini, Not Ordered, which explores the challenges facing the Panini Generation and the broader care economy. Her areas of specialization include branding and identity, storytelling, strategic planning, strategic partnerships, and advocacy for working parents. Based in Chevy Chase, Maryland, Julia continues her work as a consultant, speaker, advisor, and thought leader focused on creating greater understanding of the economic realities of women, families, and caregiving.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Julia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my early entrepreneurial spirit, strong business foundation, education at George Washington University, and the guidance of mentors such as Dr. Linda Maddox. I have also grown by learning from the people around me and embracing opportunities, including being invited to write for Harvard Business Review about postpartum depression, nursing, pumping, and parental leave.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received is to always be my authentic self and help wherever there is a need. I believe in using my time and experience to support others, whether through charitable organizations, improving pediatric emergency care, or creating meaningful experiences that help women and families maintain a sense of self during difficult times.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to stay true to themselves, seek mentors, and never be afraid to use their voice. Be willing to help others, embrace opportunities, and remember that success is not only about advancing your career but also about making a positive impact.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest opportunity in my field right now is continuing to grow in my role while working hard to improve and expand the impact of my book, Panini Not Ordered. I see this as an opportunity to share meaningful insights, reach more people, and create a lasting positive impact.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I value passion, curiosity, connection, and family in both my work and personal life. I enjoy meeting new people, learning from their stories and experiences, and gaining insights from leaders, especially around women’s workplace experiences. I also prioritize a balanced life through exercise, cooking, and staying connected with my family.
