Her Story

About Julia

I'm a studio lead at Jet Set, a modern Pilates studio with locations in Sunset Harbor and Edgewater in Miami. This business started out locally in Miami on the beach and has since franchised into something bigger. I became a studio lead last August or September, where I help run the studio and make sure everything's going well. I've definitely gotten to connect with clients on a deeper level, and I've made friendships there through this job. I actually met an amazing family, and now I work with them to help babysit their kid on occasion. It's been a position where I've really learned some good lifelong skills that I'll take into further careers as I get older, and it's shown me what a great work environment is. I'm a former Division I volleyball player, but this past June, I suffered a career-ending injury with two herniated discs in my lower back. Following that, I was really trying to find myself and find what form of movement that I loved, something that connected with me and almost filled that missing part of volleyball. I got into reformer Pilates because it is a low-impact workout and was easier on my back. I took my first Jet Set class and loved it. The workout was hard and challenged me, but I was also able to modify certain movements if it ever hurt my back. I was a client for a little while, and then once I got into my routine without volleyball, I decided I wanted to find a job. Luckily, Jet Set was hiring, so I took an interview there and got the position. It's been such a great community for me to lean on since losing volleyball. This coming July, I will be becoming an instructor and taking that next step in the business. I'm currently going to school for international business and marketing, and I'm really more so on the track to get a marketing position and work in the world of PR.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my mom, who is an entrepreneur and owns her own business. I've really seen her work so hard to make her dreams come true. She has never backed down at any challenge. She's persevered through a lot and made it happen for herself. I know that throughout any hardship that I go through, personally or professionally, I'm going to make it out on the other side better off. Working hard for yourself is the best opportunity you can give for your life. I've also learned to never be stopped by any fears I have. My biggest thing has always been to ask as many questions as you want. You will never get hurt from asking questions, whereas if you don't and you just keep to yourself, that hurts you more than just having that vulnerable moment with your person of a higher position.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't ever be stopped by any fears you have. My biggest thing has always been ask as many questions as you want. You will never get hurt from asking questions. Whereas if you don't, and you just kind of keep to yourself, and you don't ask to learn, that hurts you more than just having that vulnerable moment with your person of a higher position, being like, I don't know what I'm doing! Because they're not going to look at you and think anything poorly of you. I've had more of the experience where they're like, yes, I'm glad you've asked me.
