Her Story

About Julie

Julie Brooks brings nearly two decades of expertise in executive support to her role as an executive assistant. She began her career after responding to a posting for an executive assistant position, drawn to the opportunity to help others through the human elements of the role. Over the years, she has navigated multiple industries, starting in finance before moving into tech, where she spent the majority of her career, followed by a sustainable startup, and later consumer, nonprofit, and sports sectors. In her current position, Julie manages complex calendars, document systems, and cross-functional coordination while providing strategic insight and intuitive support to executives. A notable achievement includes co-leading a team at Dolby Labs that launched Dolby Life, extending immersive sound technology from cinema into live music venues such as Dolby Live in Las Vegas, in collaboration with artists including Aerosmith and Usher. She holds a degree in sustainable spaces from Junior Community College and recently earned certification in yoga, both of which shape her approach to creating thoughtful, inclusive environments. An environmentalist, Julie supports climate initiatives and organizations such as Earthjustice. She attributes her success to grit, adaptability, and lessons from service work such as order of operations and multitasking, while valuing accountability, integrity, curiosity, courage in vulnerability, and creativity.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Julie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to being very gritty and adaptable. I draw on lessons from service industries like knowing order of operations and multitasking. Paying attention to my place in the room, understanding where others are coming from, and not getting too attached to plans since things change constantly like building a house of cards. Being calm, poised, humble, and focused on providing cohesion and help.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I received was during a project with friction, to understand that my passion for making sure everybody's voice is heard is sometimes better in a one-on-one context. Speak with purpose, listen with intent, take time to understand, and come away with a cohesive thoughtful space. This has helped me throughout my career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Get your technical skills down, locked down in systems like Microsoft apps or Google. Get comfortable in both. Also learn project management tools like Confluence or Notion to stay organized. Be comfortable with change and ambiguity since everything shifts constantly, and be reactive by finding solutions.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges are incorporating new technologies like AI efficiently without it being a hindrance or absorbing the job, and bringing humanity back into the workforce. The greatest opportunity is using technology for polished work while doubling down on authentic aspects like strong intuition, compassion, and curiosity to strategically support executives in ways tools cannot.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Accountability, integrity, curiosity to truly understand others, courage in vulnerability, and creativity are most important to me.
