Ten minutes with Julie
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to how I was raised by my parents who led by example, my mom speaking up and my dad treating me equally to my brother, and to being resilient and tenacious in the face of disappointments and setbacks.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
It's okay to say no and not take on every project. You can't do everything, and saying no helps prevent becoming overloaded and burning out.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be professional, especially with your online presence as it reflects who you are. Be kind in your communication with others. Protect your time and be mindful of what time is needed for projects.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The challenge is discoverability for authors and illustrators in a billion-dollar industry with many wonderful titles. Publishers, authors, and illustrators could work more effectively together to create supporting content on social media and publications. At Kidlit TV we focus on making content evergreen so it remains a resource.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, being honest, and being creative and fearless in your creativity.
