Her Story

About Julie

I have a very diverse professional background that has always centered around helping people and building meaningful relationships. I started my career in human resources where I worked for about 6 years, really focusing on the employee relations side. I majored in psychology for my undergrad and went through crisis training, working on a crisis line in college where I was actually voted most empathetic among about 50 other people in my training group. After having children, I devoted a good chunk of years to being a stay-at-home mom, but during that time I ran my own business doing medical research for attorneys in medical malpractice cases. When I returned to work, I spent about three and a half years in education doing special education behavior intervention, working one-on-one with children to alter their behaviors. I've always been fascinated with how things work in the brain and why people behave the way they do. I recently got my SHRM certification and just started a new role at NMDP, which was formerly Be The Match or National Marrow Donor Program. This role truly feels like me because it encompasses everything - the human resources, the education, and the medical portion. I'll be working one-on-one with donors, and what I'm really good at is building trust and rapport, getting people to open up. I'm often told that I'm the person people have never opened up to before in their life. I want to wake up every day and feel good about what I'm doing, and I'm hoping this company will be where I work forever.

01What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

For me, it's about waking up every day and feeling good about what I'm doing. I want to do meaningful work that makes an impact. I went away from the traditional corporate world for a reason, and I was looking for work where I could help people and feel that what I do matters. I have the ability to understand what other people are going through and speak with them in a way that feels respectful, where people feel heard and understood. That empathy and connection with others is really important to me. I want validation as a human being and as an individual, and I'm looking for work that feels authentic to who I am. This new role truly feels like me because it brings together all aspects of my experience and allows me to make a meaningful impact.
