About Julie

Julie A. Shay, MBA-HIN, RHIA, FAHIMA, FACHDM, ACUE, is a highly respected educator and leader in health information technology and management with over 24 years of industry experience and two decades in academia. Currently a professor at Santa Fe College, she specializes in healthcare business operations, leadership, physician practice management, and outpatient and inpatient operations management. Julie is also an approved AHIMA ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer and advocates for the critical role of trusted information in healthcare, emphasizing its impact on decision-making, cost reduction, risk management, and the promotion of quality care and business strategy.

Throughout her career, Julie has made significant contributions to health information management education, having served in prominent roles such as Chair of AHIMA’s Council for Excellence in Education and co-chair of several key AHIMA committees. As Program Director for Santa Fe College’s Health Information Technology Management Programs, she has overseen the growth and accreditation of multiple courses, fostering student success and professional development. Julie’s dedication to workforce development is reflected in her leadership of the ONC Health IT Workforce Program, which educated over 500 students and positioned Santa Fe College as a regional and national leader in health IT education.

Julie’s professional journey includes substantial experience in managed care and provider relations, having held leadership roles at UF Health and Florida Hospital, where she managed payer contracts and operationalized healthcare system contracts. She is an active member of multiple health information management associations and is a sought-after speaker at national, state, and local conferences. Recognized for her excellence in education, Julie received the 2016 AHIMA Educator Triumph Award and the FHIMA Educator Award, underscoring her lasting impact on students, colleagues, and the health information management industry.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the incredible colleagues and mentors who have invested in me, and above all, to my faith in God, who has guided me every step of the way.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received is to treat others as you wish to be treated—leading with integrity and authenticity in all that you do.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to be courageous, authentic, and confident in their abilities. The opportunities are limitless—pursue them without self-imposed barriers and approach every endeavor with excellence.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the greatest opportunities in my field is the advancement of AI and its potential to improve efficiency and outcomes in healthcare when applied responsibly within strong governance frameworks. Health information professionals stand at the intersection of business, IT, and healthcare, uniquely positioned to lead this transformation.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Grounded in integrity, authenticity, compassion, and collaboration, I aim to lead by example—living out the values I encourage in others.
