Her Story

About Julie

Julie Williamson specializes in higher education IT procurement, a role she has held for 28 years. She began her career in state government and tri-county government before transitioning to higher education, where she enjoys the campus environment and the opportunity to help students prepare for their careers. In her position, Williamson purchases technology for classrooms, including software and tools for online access, while developing a strong understanding of risks and how to mitigate them when establishing contracts. She credits her drive to her father, who taught her that the quality of one's work reflects on oneself, and she aims to be recognized as intelligent and knowledgeable in her field. Williamson serves as a go-to person who connects others with the right resources even on topics outside her daily tasks.

Ten minutes with Julie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I put so much of my drive back to my father, where he talked about how you perform and the quality of your work is a reflection on yourself. I always want to be seen as knowledgeable in what I do, a great resource, helpful, and if I don't know the answer, I will help them find the response. That's what really drives me, to be known that Julie is intelligent and knowledgeable in her field, and even if it's unrelated to technology purchases, I can connect them with the right person or give guidance. That's what makes me successful, being that go-to person.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Take every training opportunity that they can, even if it's only partially related to the career or direction that they're going, because you never know what aspects in that training might help you in your career. Also, it's a great networking event. As much as you want to get along with your colleagues, just be very conscious of being a good person and not joining in any sort of negativity, negative gossip. Do a good job. How you interact with people is a reflection on you, and how the quality of your work is a reflection on you, and people are paying attention.
