Her Story

About Juliet

Juliet Terry serves as a Legislative Advocate at the Child Care Resource Center, a nonprofit based in Southern California, where she has worked for the past four years advocating on child care issues from her office in Sacramento, California. With over 10 years in the nonprofit space, her career has centered on family issues around poverty and homelessness, youth support, education, case management through the YMCA, and housing stabilization, leading her to pursue systems-level change in safety net services, housing, healthcare, and education. She earned her bachelor's degree in child-adolescent development from San Francisco State, where she received the Marjorie Seashore Award for Academic Service and Achievement, and later completed a master's in public policy and administration at Sacramento State University while attaining the Ann Rudin Scholarship from the Sacramento County League of Women Voters. In her role, Terry connects with local and state legislators on child care, early education, and family support policies, has helped author and pass around six pieces of legislation including AB 1123 to add early childhood educator voice to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and engages with coalitions such as the ECE Coalition and End Child Poverty Coalition. She attributes her success to support from family and a persistent attitude of bringing her own chair to the table, measuring achievement by impacts on others' lives rather than awards, and values respect, love, caring, and community-minded movement building in her work.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Juliet

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the support from my mother, family, friends, and life partner who pushed me beyond my boundaries, combined with a not-giving-up attitude and bringing my own chair to the table. I measure success by the impacts left in the lives of others rather than awards.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice is to fill your own cup, act as a team within community, remember it's a marathon not a race, rest when needed, and persist towards the bigger vision without getting lost in small battles or despair.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges include living wages causing providers to leave the field, demoralizing political climate with uncertainties, and harsh realities like families losing access to care. Opportunities exist in systems change at all levels, mindset shifts, and momentum for big changes through community dialogue and collective action.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Respect, love, and caring are most important, carried into the political sphere. I am community-minded, focused on elevating movement rather than individual brand or office.
