Her Story

About Justyce

I started out in MRDD home care, working with facilities as an STNA. I worked my way up to the main building, focusing more on mental health, where I just fell in love with the field. I originally was going to law school, actually, before I decided to get credentialized clinically, and ultimately just decided to become a nurse instead. It was really a prominent time where mental health and healthcare are starting to bridge a gap, so it really worked out as far as just my preliminary background in mental health and healthcare. Now I'm a Director of Nursing, and I handle day-to-day operations overseeing 80 residents, the STNAs that take care of them daily, the nurses that are over the STNAs and the patients, and then operations on the clinical side of things to just tie it all together. I've been at my current place almost 2 years now, and I've sent two STNAs to nursing school and one LPN to RN school. Prior to that, I had 3 STNAs that all became LPNs that ended up working for the same facility. I think my biggest achievement has been taking an STNA that's been there 15 years and supporting her to go to nursing school instead, or an LPN who just doesn't see the point of becoming an RN because this is just what they're doing, and really encouraging and educating and creating a work environment where they are supported in taking that extra step.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say simplicity is key. Happiness is a variable. Joy is a choice. When you decide every day that you just want to be joyous in your decisions, it will naturally take you where you want to go. I think there's just so many pressures in life of timelines and achievements, and all of that doesn't matter when you finally stop and you think, what the heck did I even do yesterday? But when you choose joy, it's hard not to see the good in everything. You're overwhelmed with said things, and life just naturally unfolds for you.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think one of the biggest challenges is the creativity that it takes to maintain compliance of this specific field, but also human connection. I think that it can get very robotic, the expectations of taking care of people, as well as making sure we are maintaining Medicare's compliance of how things should go. But I think the biggest opportunity is having a leader, or being in a management team that really is all on the same page as far as everybody having a task or a role in this field to create a well-oiled machine. When we're on our A-game and we're working together and helping one another out, we create opportunities for positions that we didn't even know we could make, or would need, or can tap into to have people progress in situations where maybe there wouldn't normally be a promotion, or recognition, or acknowledgement. It's a field that's never going to die - people are always going to need assistance to this degree. But highlighting a lot of the tasks and teamwork that it takes to make that work just creates opportunities for growth across the board. A housekeeper doesn't just have to stay a housekeeper, an STNA doesn't just have to stay an STNA. A nurse doesn't just have to stay an LPN. And just with a supportive team, you can wear multiple hats in one place.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

A quote I live by, for myself at home and at work is, be whom you needed. I think that we spend a lot of time judging people for the choices that they make without really exploring the options that they had. It really boils down to exactly that, just being who you needed. Not everyone needs direction or correction. Some of us just need an ear, some of us just need someone to understand. And some of us just need a hug. And so, really just self-reflecting with anyone I encounter, it's just what I really strive and try to live by every day.
