Her Story

About Kacey

I've been working in farming for about a year now, though my journey with environmental advocacy and teaching the community about composting started back in 2021. Before farming, I worked at Sunnylands, a museum in Rancho Mirage. What drew me to farming was my desire to learn how to nurture the environment and support myself while simultaneously taking care of the planet. I believe that one of the things we can do to take care of the environment is to change some of the ways we meet our basic needs - eating is one of our basic needs, medical is one of our basic needs, and unfortunately transportation is one of our basic needs. So I asked myself, how can we meet our basic needs in a way that doesn't damage the environment? I chose farming because I like growing plants. I completed an apprenticeship in small organic farming, and I'm planning to do more - there are opportunities to do a master's program in environmental agriculture or ethnobotany. I've been involved with We Compost 2 since 2019, working on composting education and environmental advocacy in the community.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I think the greatest piece of advice I've received is that it starts with ourselves. A lot of people think it's selfish to take care of yourself, or to work on yourself, or to spend time improving yourself, but I think that's actually the best way to do it. Sometimes we try to fix things outside of ourselves, but it's best just to start with ourselves.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

For someone to start farming, I would tell them to intern at a farm. You can do that through WWOOF America - I think that's what the website's called, W-O-O-F. Yeah, volunteer at a farm, or intern at a farm, get paid to do it.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty, even if it's difficult. Maybe just doing what you believe is the right thing to do, even when it's difficult. Taking care of other people, and taking care of ourselves. And working on ourselves.
