Her Story

About Kaila

Kaila Barksdale is a recent graduate of the University of Utah, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Writing and Rhetoric Studies with a minor in Ethnic Studies while competing as a Division I NCAA tennis athlete on a full scholarship. Her academic and athletic experience allowed her to develop strong skills in analytical writing, qualitative research, reading comprehension, communication, discipline, and teamwork. She was recognized as a PAC-12 All-Conference Honorable Mention in 2023. A creative and passionate reader from a young age, Kaila has always been drawn to writing and storytelling, particularly fiction, and developed an interest in creative expression well beyond her grade level during her early education.

Kaila currently works with an after-school tennis program, where she helps younger athletes develop fundamental skills while emphasizing sportsmanship, teamwork, confidence, and a positive approach to competition. She also tutors younger students part-time in writing composition, reading, and English, allowing her to combine her academic strengths with her passion for helping others learn and grow. Looking ahead, she plans to continue her education with a master's degree in Writing and Rhetoric Studies. Her long-term interests in writing are closely connected to her passion for exploring different cultures, the experiences of women from diverse backgrounds, and social justice issues that can raise awareness and contribute to positive change around the world.

Kaila attributes her success to hard work, dedication, persistence, curiosity, and a willingness to continue learning. She believes in being resilient, trusting her own voice, asking questions, embracing opportunities, and leading by example. Integrity, honesty, and empathy are central to the way she approaches both her professional and personal life, and she strives to remain positive, open-minded, and authentic while making a difference each day. Although she does not currently have published works or professional associations beyond her college coursework, she hopes to continue developing her writing and sharing her stories and perspectives with others. Outside of academics and coaching, her special interests include writing, sports, track and field, fitness, gymnastics, and tennis.

Ten minutes with Kaila

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hard work, dedication, and persistence. I believe in continuing to move forward, even when faced with obstacles, and I never allow challenges to discourage me from pursuing my goals. I remain committed to lifelong learning through continuing education and embracing opportunities to grow both personally and professionally. I am also passionate about supporting my school community and contributing in ways that make a meaningful difference.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to be resilient, never allow myself to be intimidated by others, and have the confidence to voice my opinions because my perspective matters. I’ve learned to stay curious, ask questions, and view every experience as an opportunity to learn and grow. I also believe in embracing opportunities when they arise, stepping outside my comfort zone, and approaching each new challenge with confidence and an open mind.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering my industry is to put yourself out there, explore different opportunities, and discover what you are truly passionate about and love to do. Bring positivity, encouragement, and a collaborative spirit to your team, because the energy you contribute often comes back to you. Lead by example, communicate openly and honestly, and build strong relationships based on trust and respect. Most importantly, trust yourself, have confidence in your abilities, and never be afraid to be your own person.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest opportunities in my field right now are to continue drawing on my experience in tennis and use that knowledge to become the best coach I can be for my team. I also see a meaningful opportunity to continue developing my writing and deepening my work in ethnic studies, using both to share my stories, experiences, and perspectives with others. Through coaching and writing, I hope to inspire, educate, and connect with people while continuing to grow in both areas.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are integrity, honesty, and empathy. I believe in expressing myself openly and authentically while treating others with understanding, compassion, and respect. I strive to lead by example, remain positive and adaptable when faced with change, and approach every situation with an open mind. Most importantly, I want to make a meaningful difference each day through the way I lead, communicate, and support those around me.
