About Kamiya
Kamiya Willoughby is a screenwriter and filmmaker based in the entertainment industry, where she has worked for five years. Her path began with four years of service in the Air Force as a ground equipment mechanic, followed by enrollment in business school at the University of Colorado Denver. While there, she founded Solnia, a vegan and vegetarian soul food company that operated pop-ups and catering events in Denver until she dissolved it in 2020. Drawn to storytelling, she created her first short film through crowdfunding and was accepted into Loyola Marymount University for screenwriting, graduating in 2024. During her time at LMU, she completed multiple internships and transitioned into roles as a writer's PA and showrunner's assistant. Her short film Dottie was recently accepted into LA Shorts, and she continues to develop feature projects while emphasizing community collaboration and respect in her creative work.

01What do you attribute your success to?
My parents and their support. They empower me all the time and donated to my short film.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be honest with yourself and get very clear on what you want. Talk to your community.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenges: not many jobs, can feel limiting and confirm fears of not being good enough. Opportunities: creating your own art by collaborating with others.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Respect for yourself, your art, and the people around you. Communication and understanding others.
