About Kara
Kara McMurrayField serves as a UX Designer for the estimating platform at HCSS in the construction software industry. She has spent 2 years in the construction space while accumulating nearly 10 years in UX since 2016. Her career began as a graphic designer for 4 to 5 years after college, after which she pursued an MBA from Texas A&M to engage more deeply with business strategy. This led her to roles as a consultant and then into UI/UX, where she has held titles including UX Designer, Senior UX Designer, and Product Designer at startups and Amazon. At a previous position with the medical device company Livinova, she contributed to an iPad kiosk tool for doctors managing epilepsy devices, collaborating on FDA requirements and refining workflows and language to improve usability, resulting in higher adoption rates and an 8-week schedule advantage. In her current role, she advocates for diverse users from CEOs to foremen through user interviews, workflow improvements, and product strategy across 15 products with a team of 7 UX professionals. Kara aspires to move into product management or design strategy, embracing AI's influence on the field, and advises aspiring professionals, especially women, to avoid perfectionism, learn from mistakes, and recognize that career paths are not permanent.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would tell people don't be afraid to make mistakes, because that's how you learn. And nothing's permanent. A lot of women get stuck in this idea of perfectionism, but you can get into a job that isn't your dream job yet and see where it takes you. Everything is not permanent, you can change and be who you want to be.
