Her Story

About Kara

I'm an organizational development consultant, which means I spend most of my time guiding organizations through how they can improve their efficiency, their structure, and their values and mission at their organization. I often work with executive directors and C-level people in C-level positions to talk more about what's happening at their organization and how they can operate more effectively to make an impact in the community. I've been in the nonprofit sector for nearly 15 years, so the organizational development piece is what I do currently, but I've been in the public sector space for about 15 years. Before I was a consultant, I worked with charities in multiple different positions. I was a director running programs, I worked with funders like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Citibank Foundation to run programs at nonprofit organizations all across the country. I worked with Habitat for Humanity International, and I also served at the beginning of my career as an AmeriCorps member, which is a federally funded program that helps engage people in civic engagement projects and service learning projects.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Kara

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say I attribute my success to others who have seen something in me, who took the time to mentor me and build me up, both personally and professionally.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

At the end of the day, people make the biggest change, and relationships are what matters more than anything else.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Be true to yourself, and honor what feels right in your heart, no matter what the circumstances.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I would say AI is obviously really influencing how people communicate with one another, and how they find opportunities for funding and growth. So understanding the trends that are happening in that sector is important. I would also say that as we see many government shifts happening across the world, what's needed in communities is going to vary, and there's going to be a real value in human-centered work, so focusing on a human-centered approach is going to be a huge trend in this space.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I would say authenticity, kindness, and intention are the values most important to me.
