Her Story

About Kareemah

I've been an attorney for 13 years since 2013, and I've worked in almost every field of law possible. I started out as a family law attorney and quickly jumped into public interest work. From there, I transitioned to become a prosecutor, and then I wanted to make an even more forceful impact in my community, so I moved to the city of Atlanta where I served as an assistant city attorney. I got to work on a lot of great things that helped to better our community and make sure things were going in the best interest of our citizens, and I'm really proud of my work there. After a few years, I went to a private firm, and now I'm with MARTA, all working in the public interest sector. MARTA is one of the top 10 transit authorities in the nation, and we operate with an operations team of just under 5,000 people. I work on the legal team, and I make sure that pretty much anything that's going to go to court or could potentially wind up in litigation comes my way. Professionally in our field, I've served in a number of leadership positions, and most recently, I was appointed the president of the Georgia Association for Women Lawyers, which has been around since 1928. I now lead that organization in our efforts to advocate on behalf of women lawyers and our community as well.

Ten minutes with Kareemah

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say have a vision and never give up on it. Have a vision and follow it.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honor, integrity, and togetherness are the values most important to me. If you make it easy for people to talk to you and trust you, they share their stories, and that's another value I appreciate - sharing their voice. The more conversation we have, the more we realize we're all kind of the same. We're all just looking to fit in and find our purpose in life, and we're all in it together. I value acceptance and just recognizing that we all have different voices, but ultimately we're all working toward the same things.
