She is now focused on expanding her impact in the field and is exploring the development of her own consulting business to share her expertise in event planning and execution.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Karen

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hard work, being kind, and leading by example. I feel lucky that I have a great team with me, and I want to say I trained them, all of them, from zero as well. I trained them from serving plates, from bartending, from greeting guests and making sure that they understand how to take care of guests and deliver a great experience. It's a lot of work, but I make sure to be kind with them. I have all the trust, and I trust all of them, so it's a lot of work there but that trust is a big part of how we operate and succeed together.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

It's going to be work. It's a lot of work. But you know what? It's great, and you did amazing. I will say that. I am a domestic violence survivor, so from that point to the point that I am now, I'm really proud of myself. So my advice is to believe in yourself and know that even though it's hard work, you can do amazing things.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I love learning. I love literally learning, and I love challenges. Especially when you see something is going to work, you want to make it work and make it happen. Right now, I'm planning and hoping to open my own consulting company. I'm working really hard on that, so hopefully that happens soon. I talk a lot with people in private events and they're like, 'Oh, I need you to help me, I need you to tell me how to do this,' so I try to help them and guide them. That's why I want to build my own consulting company.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Loyalty is the most important value to me. I'm loyal to my team, loyal to myself, and loyal to the people that I love. I also value hard work, being kind, and leading by example. I feel lucky that I have a great team with me, and I trained all of them from zero. I make sure to be kind with them and trust them completely. I'm also a domestic violence survivor, and from that point to where I am now, I'm really proud of myself and the growth I've achieved.
