About Karen

She is a distinguished literacy educator, academic leader, and consultant with deep expertise in reading science, structured literacy, and teacher preparation. Currently serving as Assistant Professor of Literacy and Director of Reading Science Programs at Marian University's Klipsch Educators College, she leads program coordination, curriculum development, and teacher training in evidence-based reading instruction. She has held this role since 2018 and was promoted to Director of Reading Science Programs in 2023. She also serves as an Orton-Gillingham Trainer with the M.A. Rooney Foundation, providing specialized training in structured literacy approaches. She is the Business Owner of KB Literacy Consulting, offering literacy consulting services to schools and educators. She holds a Doctor of Education in Reading from Mount St. Joseph University. She is recognized as a passionate, knowledgeable, and transformative educator who is deeply committed to advancing literacy instruction, supporting teachers, and improving reading outcomes for all students through research-based, inclusive practices.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Try new things. Don't get stuck in your same bubble. Expand your knowledge through new opportunities. Get out of your comfort zone and look at all aspects of the profession.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges are that in higher ed we're often siloed and not as collaborative as K-12. Working alone for a long time until recently hiring two instructors.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being humble is really important. Always learning because research is evolving and truly anybody an expert.
