About Karen
Karen N. Darkes serves as Executive Director of the Maryland Democratic Party, bringing more than 13 years of experience in political fundraising, campaign strategy, and organizational leadership. Her career in public service and political engagement began while she was a student at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and served as a student member of the Board of Regents. During this time, her passion for civic engagement and leadership led to an opportunity to intern on Anthony Brown’s 2014 gubernatorial campaign. Recognized for her exceptional work ethic, initiative, and campaign acumen, Karen became the first intern from the campaign to be hired full-time as a Finance Assistant, launching her career in political fundraising.
Throughout her career, Karen has built a reputation as a strategic fundraising leader with expertise in developing and executing high-impact campaign finance initiatives. She has managed national fundraising efforts for prominent political figures, including Congressman Elijah Cummings, Congresswoman Lucy McBath, and Senator Amy Klobuchar, helping generate millions of dollars in campaign support through donor engagement, strategic partnerships, and innovative fundraising approaches. As a political fundraising consultant and founder of Karenicholle Consulting, she has helped organizations and candidates strengthen their fundraising operations, expand stakeholder networks, and achieve mission-driven goals. In 2024, Karen returned to the Maryland Democratic Party as Executive Director, where she leads strategic initiatives, supports statewide engagement efforts, and works to advance the organization’s goals through collaboration, leadership, and community connection.
Beyond her professional achievements, Karen is passionate about service, mentorship, and creating opportunities for others. She is actively involved with the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Metropolitan Washington, D.C. Chapter, and Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, where she has held leadership roles including Regional Legislative Chair and Chapter Parliamentarian. Guided by the values of respect, honesty, kindness, empathy, and equality, Karen believes that authentic relationships and compassionate leadership are essential to achieving lasting impact. Outside of her professional and community commitments, she enjoys attending live concerts and experiencing the energy and connection that music brings. She continues to inspire emerging leaders, encouraging young women entering politics to remain persistent, build strong networks, seek mentors, and pursue opportunities where they can make a meaningful difference.

Ten minutes with Karen
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to a strong work ethic, a commitment to delivering high-quality work, and the ability to build meaningful relationships along the way. Throughout my career in politics and campaigns, I have learned the importance of being a dependable team player who can collaborate effectively with diverse individuals and teams. I believe that the relationships you build, the respect you earn, and the positive impact you leave on others are just as important as the work itself. By consistently showing up, contributing my best, and fostering strong professional connections, I have been able to create lasting opportunities and make a meaningful difference.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received is that you get more with honey. Approaching people with kindness, respect, and a positive attitude can make a significant difference in building strong relationships and achieving shared goals. I have learned that leading with compassion and treating others with genuine care creates trust, encourages collaboration, and opens the door to meaningful opportunities. Kindness is a powerful leadership quality that can have a lasting impact on both personal and professional success.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering my industry is to be persistent, proactive, and confident in pursuing their goals. Success does not always happen immediately, so it is important not to become discouraged by delays or setbacks. Seek out mentors and connect with professionals whose careers inspire you, as building relationships and learning from others can be invaluable. Most importantly, find a strong support network of people who believe in you, advocate for your growth, and encourage you throughout your journey. Having the determination to keep moving forward and the right people by your side can make a lasting difference.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is navigating an environment where competition can sometimes lead people to undermine one another rather than collaborate and support shared success. However, there are also tremendous opportunities for growth, especially for those willing to work hard, build relationships, and take initiative. Campaigns provide a unique opportunity to have a meaningful seat at the table, make a tangible impact, and advance quickly through dedication and experience. Starting at an entry-level position can open doors to significant professional growth and the chance to shape important initiatives.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are respect, honesty, kindness, empathy, and equality. I believe that how you treat people has a lasting impact, and that leading with compassion and understanding creates stronger relationships and more positive outcomes. I have always believed that you get more with honey approaching others with patience, respect, and kindness is far more effective than creating unnecessary challenges. By staying true to these values, I strive to foster trust, collaboration, and an environment where everyone feels valued and respected.
