About Karen

Karen Espino serves as the store manager for Kay Jewelers in Odessa, Texas, a position she has held for one year and three months. She has spent 11 years with Signet Jewelers overall, advancing from sales roles to assistant manager for nearly six years before her promotion and relocation to West Texas. Her expertise centers on sales and customer service, where she plans daily store operations, sets sales targets, trains staff, and drives traffic through calls and community outreach. Espino earned an associate degree in business and is pursuing a bachelor's degree in business administration. Through her company, she obtained certifications in diamondology and gemology to provide accurate information to customers and train peers. She attributes her success to consistency and discipline, emphasizing the importance of showing up and performing to the best of one's ability even without daily motivation. Outside of work, Espino organizes an annual family charity event every Christmas, providing toys, candy, food, and clothes to Indigenous children in rural Mexico, a cause close to her heart as a first-generation immigrant who attended school there as a child. She values transparency, humility, and openness to others' perspectives, believing everyone has a story from which to learn. In her advice to young women entering the field, she highlights the educational aspects of learning about diamonds, gemstones, and metals, along with persistence and patience, noting the rewarding opportunity to grow alongside customers over time.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Karen

01What do you attribute your success to?

I truly believe in the power of consistency and discipline. Motivation is temporary—it comes and goes, and there will be days when you simply don’t feel like doing what needs to be done. That’s when discipline makes the difference.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Try again.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

If you are passionate about sales, believe you have strong potential in this field, or simply want to challenge yourself by stepping into something different and educational, I encourage you to give it a chance.

Working in the jewelry industry is a unique experience because there is always something new to learn—from diamonds and gemstones to precious metals, customer relationships, and the art of sales. It teaches you valuable qualities such as persistence, patience, confidence, and resilience.

Most importantly, don’t give up when things get challenging. If you decide to pursue this opportunity, stay committed and don’t let discouragement stop you. It is a beautiful place to work because you have the opportunity not only to grow professionally, but also to grow alongside the people you meet and build meaningful relationships with your customers and team.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges: people are very introverts which makes it difficult to approach in sales conversations, economy, shift to social media instead of in-person. Opportunities: create connections through social media like TikTok videos to pull in customers, feature items, and be more out there to build traffic for the store.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I believe in being transparent and genuine with people. I’m someone who naturally chooses to see the good in others and believes that everyone has something valuable to offer.

Many of my values come from the way I was raised, especially the importance of staying humble, treating others with respect, and being open to different perspectives. I believe we can learn something from everyone we meet because every person has their own story, experiences, and lessons to share.

For me, being open-minded and willing to listen is just as important as sharing my own knowledge. You never know who might teach you something that changes the way you see things, and I believe that continuous learning and understanding others is an important part of both personal and professional growth.
