Founder & Executive Director
Hearts and Arts Foundation
Austin, TX 78732

Karen Lai, M.A., LMFT, is the Founder and Executive Director of the Hearts and Arts Foundation in Austin, Texas, where she is dedicated to expanding access to creative and mental health resources through community-centered programming. Originally born and raised in California, Karen spent part of her childhood living in Tokyo, Japan, where she experienced life abroad while attending high school as a Japanese American primarily speaking English. Raised by her single mother during that time, her international upbringing deeply influenced her passion for psychology, culture, and helping others navigate life transitions. Today, she is a licensed marriage and family therapist in California, bringing a culturally informed and compassionate approach to supporting individuals, couples, and families.

Karen earned her Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology, along with a Bachelor’s degree with a double major in Psychology and Ethnic Studies from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Her professional work centers on mental health wellness, community support, and nonprofit leadership. After relocating to Austin during the COVID-19 pandemic with her husband and two sons, ages 8 and 10, she experienced challenges finding community and personal creative outlets in a new city. She discovered the therapeutic benefits of pottery, which inspired her love for the arts and motivated her to create more opportunities for others to experience creativity and connection.

Through the Hearts and Arts Foundation, Karen works to make art accessible by organizing workshops, community meetups, fundraisers, and creative events that support emotional wellness and artistic expression. She is passionate about elevating underrepresented voices, supporting community connection, and providing spaces where people can explore creativity regardless of background or experience level. Outside of her professional work, Karen enjoys cooking, pottery, oil painting, and learning floral art, all of which reflect her belief in creativity as a powerful tool for healing, self-expression, and joy in everyday life. She is driven by her commitment to family, community, resilience, and making a meaningful impact one person and one creative experience at a time.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to just my own personal experiences. I touched on a little bit about me moving to Japan, and some of the hardships that I went through as a teenager, being in another country. But it's also just thriving from that, and not giving up, and just wanting more and better for myself - attaining my education, attaining my master's degree, getting licensed, and then just now starting up this nonprofit for myself and for the community. I think just everything that I've been able to do, even if they were little baby steps, I think that has all attributed to my success. I do also have to say that my family has been very supportive, including my husband and my two kids. They're very creative and fun and artful, so they've inspired me to keep at it, and so I definitely need to give them some credit, too.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would advise young women entering this industry to dream big and pursue their goals with confidence and determination. While it is important to have big aspirations, success requires taking action, believing in yourself, and being willing to learn and grow along the way. Opportunities will not always come to you you have to create them through persistence, hard work, and a willingness to keep moving forward even when things feel challenging.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

As an early-stage nonprofit, some of the biggest challenges I face include building awareness of our programs, growing our audience in Austin, and developing sustainable partnerships that support long-term impact. At the same time, there are exciting opportunities to collaborate with local organizations that serve vulnerable populations, elevate under-recognized local artists, and expand programming through pop-up events and community-based creative experiences in other cities.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Creativity, community access to the arts, resilience, and family support are the values that are most important to me in both my professional and personal life. I believe strongly in the power of creativity to support emotional wellness and build meaningful connections between people. I am passionate about creating opportunities that make the arts more accessible to everyone, while also modeling resilience, maintaining strong family relationships, and fostering supportive communities wherever possible.
