Her Interview

Ten minutes with Karen

01What do you attribute your success to?

My dedication. I started as a receptionist and did so well I got promoted to leasing coordinator, then worked with ZCC where I was promoted to housing coordinator, and then was hired back as property manager.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

You have to be patient. You cannot be scared of the market or your boss. Companies need you more than you need them. Don't be scared to ask for promotions or raises - you always have a no as an answer but if lucky they say yes.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges: Handling 350 units across 6 buildings alone with an 11-person team, keeping delinquency under 6%, dealing with complicated tenants and eviction processes. Opportunities: Networking with vendors, lawyers, court system, and tenants which helps build relationships for future growth.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being passionate about what you do, being responsible, always controlling data, being organized, and having a lot of character. As a young woman who is tiny, you have to be direct, firm, and straightforward to be taken seriously as a manager.
