Her Story
About Karen
Karen Paris is a Senior Design Director, Denim at Sunrise Brands Inc., where she leads design for Sam Edelman, Rebecca Minkoff, Joie, and Diane Gilman. With more than 30 years of experience in the fashion industry, she has built a career centered on creative direction for denim brands spanning contemporary to mid-tier price points, skillfully translating trend and strategy into fully merchandised collections that stay on calendar and on budget. A graduate of Kent State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion and Apparel Design, Paris relocated to New York in 1998 and launched her career at Calvin Klein working on CK Jeans.
Throughout her career, Paris has held senior design roles at some of the industry's most recognized names, including Gloria Vanderbilt, where she helped launch the Glow Jeans line and later earned the Star Award for Outstanding Employee, as well as Jordache, Liz Claiborne, Jones New York, and Diane Gilman. Her expertise spans denim, wovens, juniors, and children's wear, and she has taken on design director responsibilities at a private-label startup in addition to her long-standing work in denim leadership. Her multiple Vendor of the Year honors at HSN further reflect her consistent excellence and reliability within the industry.
Today, Paris oversees day-to-day design operations that include calendar and budget management, tech-pack review, sample tracking, vendor and buyer meetings, line presentations, fittings, and production oversight. She is deeply passionate about sustainable, recyclable, and circular design practices, and she continues to draw on her hands-on knowledge of denim fabric, fit, and wash to guide her teams. Outside of her professional accomplishments, Paris values community and mentorship, and finds personal joy in live music, museums, and creative projects with her family, including designing cosplay costumes with her daughter for Comic-Con.

Ten minutes with Karen
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the leadership and behind-the-scenes work I bring to every team I'm part of — the key to collection design running smoothly. Over the years, this has meant managing teams closely, traveling for design inspiration, and building experience across multiple categories, including denim, wovens, and children's wear.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I’ve been fortunate to have incredible mentors throughout my career, and their guidance has profoundly shaped who I am today as both a designer and a leader. From each of them, I’ve carried forward invaluable lessons and nuggets of wisdom—most importantly, to always be honest, take accountability, and lead by example.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The journey to the top is never easy, but when you bring energy, passion, and purpose to your work every day, success follows—and you inspire those around you along the way.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The business is facing the challenges of rising costs and increasingly savvy consumers who are more discerning about where they spend their money. We need to find creative ways to deliver quality, uniqueness, and value that surprise and delight our customers. In an increasingly saturated market, creating that meaningful point of difference and compelling storytelling is essential to standing out and earning her loyalty.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Leadership, collaboration, and building a strong sense of community among fellow professionals matter deeply to me — I believe in maintaining relationships and supporting one another in this industry, whether it be recruiting a professional through networking , or sourcing fabrics or trims from vendors I have had relationships with for many years. On a personal level, I cherish my love for fashion and creativity, whether that's through attending live music events and museums or collaborating with my teenage daughter on cosplay costumes for Comic-Con.
