Her Story

About Karen

Karen E. Parsons is the Founder and Owner of Southern Fried Solutions LLC, a business consulting firm established in February of the previous year following her departure from a payroll management role. Through her firm, she partners with organizations to identify and recover hidden revenue resulting from billing discrepancies, contractual inefficiencies, and incomplete or inaccurate invoicing. Her work focuses on strengthening operational procedures, improving financial accuracy, and helping businesses unlock overlooked income through practical, sustainable solutions.

Parsons brings a broad and diverse professional background spanning multiple industries. Her experience includes five years as a bank examiner with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), five years in property management, and seven years in sales administration and payroll management within the private sector. She also spent ten years serving in multiple supportive and leadership capacities as a pastor’s wife, where she developed strong interpersonal, organizational, and community leadership skills. In addition, she has contributed her expertise as a board member of Women Inspiring Social Change (WISC), further reflecting her commitment to empowerment and community impact.

She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration, graduating magna cum laude from Jackson State University in 1991, and also pursued studies in sign language interpreting at Georgia Perimeter College. Parsons credits her entrepreneurial mindset to her father’s example of tenacity and calculated risk-taking. She continues to draw on those values in her professional journey and advises others to avoid environments where they are not appreciated, emphasizing the importance of respect, alignment, and purpose in both career and life decisions.

Ten minutes with Karen

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the unwavering influence of my parents. From my father, I inherited the tenacity to persevere through challenges and the confidence to take calculated risks. Watching him work multiple jobs and overcome difficult circumstances instilled in me a strong entrepreneurial spirit and a relentless work ethic. From my mother, I learned the value of quiet strength, resilience, and steadfast support. Her constant presence behind the scenes provided the stability and encouragement that allowed our family to thrive. Together, their example shaped the values, determination, and balanced perspective that continue to guide both my personal and professional journey.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to never stay where you’re not appreciated. Don’t continue investing your time, energy, and talents in environments or relationships where your contributions are not valued. This advice has shaped not only my career decisions but also my personal life, reminding me to seek opportunities and build relationships grounded in mutual respect, appreciation, and purpose.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to stay true to who you are and never lose sight of your passion. Pursue work that aligns with your values and purpose, because genuine passion has a way of creating opportunities and opening doors. While your career path may include unexpected detours, don’t let them distract you from your long-term vision. I’ve experienced those detours myself, but I never abandoned my passion, and that commitment has ultimately guided me to where I am today.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest developments in my field right now is the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, which presents both challenges and opportunities. On one hand, AI has the potential to displace jobs and create uncertainty for experienced professionals as organizations automate more functions. On the other hand, it offers significant advantages by streamlining workflows, increasing efficiency, and automating time-consuming tasks that once required substantial manual effort. The key is learning how to adapt, embrace these technologies strategically, and leverage them to enhance, rather than replace, human expertise.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life center on self-respect, mutual appreciation, and integrity. I believe it is essential to recognize your own worth and to not remain in environments or relationships where your contributions are undervalued or unappreciated. I prioritize spaces where respect is mutual, communication is honest, and people are valued for what they bring. These principles guide how I make decisions, set boundaries, and maintain balance in all areas of life.
