Her Story

About Karen

Karen Pomarico is an international exhibiting photographer whose work is represented by three galleries in Europe and has been exhibited at art world fairs including in Marbella, Spain. She began her studies at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn in 1980, where her focus on photography started in 1981 under the mentorship of William Gedney, emphasizing visual storytelling and bookbinding processes. As editorial director for the Pictorial List magazine, she oversees the publication of articles and interviews with artists from around the world, having published 378 articles across 60 countries. Karen is co-founder, vice president, and director of the art space in Newburgh, NY, for the Pictorial Foundation, which became a 501C3 not-for-profit in 2024. She is also a member of the National Association of Women Artists and specializes in curating, editorial work, and supporting artists at all levels. Through the foundation and magazine, she donates her time to help emerging artists develop narratives for their work, conducts portfolio reviews, and facilitates international collaborations such as with Photografar Palavras in Portugal and residencies in France, while never charging artists fees for submissions or publications.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Listen to your feelings and trust your own identity and voice in your work. Don't let people change your work. Look for groups and collaboratives. Focus on projects as valuable experiences that can evolve over time.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges: Making the foundation healthy and growing it properly, finding donors, writing grants, building local community support and trust in Newburgh. Opportunities: International collaborations, such as with Photografar Palavras in Portugal and residencies in France.
