Ten minutes with Karen
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to discipline, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to authenticity. Remaining grounded, present, and relevant has allowed me to make purposeful decisions and meaningful progress throughout my career. Consistency has also been central to my leadership—people know they can rely on me, and that my word is my bond.
I have always believed in elevating those around me. Strengthening the capabilities of others strengthens the institution, and in a technical field such as ours, there is tremendous value in surrounding oneself with people whose expertise may even surpass one’s own. That is how excellence is built.
I also attribute my success to leading with heart. In the business of training and developing people, it is essential to understand what motivates them, how they think, and what inspires them to grow. These same principles guided me throughout my career in financial services, where success is rooted in relationships, connection, and—above all—integrity.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Throughout my career, one piece of advice has guided my decision‑making: never wait to be fearless, and never expect universal approval. Progress rarely comes with consensus. Instead, confidence must lead. When you are certain of your purpose and direction, you step forward decisively — and you do not look back. This principle has shaped how I lead, how I build, and how I continue to evolve.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The advice I would give to young people starting their entrepreneurial journey is this: begin with a workable blueprint. It will not be perfect, and it does not need to be. What matters is having a clear, functional starting point that can guide you through the early stages of building and establishing your business.
Do not count the hours you put in—this is your venture, and in the early days the hours simply do not matter. Roll up your sleeves. Know your business inside out. Know your customers. Understand the wider macro‑environment you operate in so you can navigate challenging and volatile periods with confidence.
Do not measure yourself against others. Bring your own authenticity—that is what will attract people to you and to your brand. Be a good listener. Be a committed learner. Be a coach to those who work with you. Stay grounded, and stay close to whatever spiritual guidance inspires you. That grounding will give you clarity, resilience, and the steady direction you need as you grow.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the greatest challenges in today’s global environment is navigating constant disruption while remaining relevant and continuously building the business. The real test is how to stand out consistently without becoming a passing trend, and how to stay grounded in the true ethos of the institution. It requires clarity of purpose, disciplined execution, and a deep commitment to the values that define who we are and why we exist.
The greatest opportunities today lie in casting your net wide and remaining open to where new possibilities emerge. Growth comes from continuously scaling, expanding your reach, and positioning your business as a “must‑have” rather than a “nice‑to‑have.” Regardless of size, you must stay visible, stay connected, and stay engaged—even if it feels repetitive. That consistency is part of your groundedness, and it signals to the market that you are committed for the long haul. It builds trust, reinforces your relevance, and strengthens the belief that your business is here to stay.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me begin with my spiritual foundation. My relationship with God is the cornerstone on which I built this business. I do not make decisions without praying over them, and that spiritual grounding guides my judgment, my resilience, and my purpose.
Equally important are the relationships I hold with my clients and every student who walks through the doors of Fitz Ritson & Associates. They must always feel that this institution is a safe haven—somewhere they can return again and again, knowing they will be supported, guided, and strengthened through whatever professional or personal storms they may face.
My relationship with my team is another core value. They are an extension of my family, and mutual trust is essential because that is how we grow. Technical skills matter, but they are not the essence of what makes us who we are. In a world where artificial intelligence can replicate many technical functions, what remains irreplaceable is the heart. AI can process data, but it cannot care. It cannot feel. It cannot connect. The heart is our greatest value in this business—and it must expand and beat stronger every day.
