Her Story
About Karen
Daniel James Bondehagen was a protégé of Gary Ridgway, The Green River Killer. When she wrote her first book, she was stalked by the serial killer. He broke into her house and crushed her laptop. Later she aided in his capture. Gary Ridgway endorsed her book. Her second book in the series helped locate another murder victim. Ridgway was released from high security prison by the King County Sheriff's Office to testify on that murder. The third book in the series was used to close more murder cases than anything else in world history.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I'm militant about sticking to my outline. The outline prevents writer's block and propels the work forward to the finish line. I have turning points that drive the main point. The turning points are evenly spaced in the work to keep the reader engaged. As a result, my books are referred to as "Can't put down" books.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
In the class "Women in Art," we learned to write more than required. Then edit the piece down to make the work more succinct. Then add to the writing. And then edit down again. The writing expands and contracts until it starts to breathe. In the process, the work becomes alive.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Decide who your audience is. Who are you writing the book for? If the work is for yourself, that's okay. Just be aware that the book fulfills a personal goal. If the work is for a particular audience, make sure to write to that audience.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The competition is fierce. Many books flood the market. And Artificial Intelligence is a competition. But readers are looking for fresh works and new voices.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty. Authenticity.
